Lily and Will

As you can tell from the beautiful piece our sister wrote, we think MOON DUNE is a very special place indeed. Located in the Tahoe Vista section on the California side of Lake Tahoe’s north shore, it is both close to everything, and secluded enough to escape the world!

Our grandparents had been taking our mom, Katie, her brother, Renwick, and sister, Clarisse, on camping adventures to Tahoe for years. In those days, it would take nine hours or more on old, windy roads to Tahoe from San Francisco (now it’s just four!). Our grandmother, Lily, and her second husband, a country lawyer named Will Mooney eventually bought a nice piece of lakefront land in the 1930s. Neither of them had built a house before. For the next ten years, piece by piece, summer by summer, the whole family chipped in and MOON DUNE grew from a dream into a reality!

We offer it for you to rent during the late spring through early fall months only, because the home has not been winterized, yet. We have just acquired MOON DUNE from our aunt, and are in the process of a gradual restoration. What makes it so wonderful, we think, is the rustic nature of this home in the “Old Tahoe” style. Having said that, we can assure you that MOON DUNE contains modern and up-to-date amenities. The kitchen has a brand new refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher. Everything from blender to microwave oven, coffee maker, and all necessary pots and pans are there. We have all new glasses, silver, and fiesta ware service for twelve. The long dining room table, with Spanish tile floor, has a large picture window facing the lake. There is a separate utility porch adjoining the kitchen with a washer and dryer.

Walking into the carpeted living room, you’ll see an antique upright piano in the corner. Looking up, hanging from the ceiling, is the incredible chandelier: a ship’s wheel from an ancient sailing vessel adorned with lanterns! This living room with knotty pinewood paneling is the perfect place to hang out, visit, read, or watch TV. There’s a TV and VCR (with full cable), and a stereo equipped with a CD player.

The room’s centerpiece is the massive fireplace filled with colored stones, crystals, and a circle of rose quartz containing within it the birthstone of all the kids in the family! If that’s not enough, the magnificent view from the giant picture window and side bay windows is always striking and ever changing: Lake Tahoe!

MOON DUNE has five bedrooms and can sleep ten people comfortably. There are 3 bathrooms, two with showers, and one with a charming aqua green bathtub. All towels and linens are provided. Overlooking the living room is a small intimate reading and writing balcony with desk and light. There are also several bookshelves throughout the home containing a variety of books and games.

Each morning, you walk out the old wooden front door onto the stone patio overlooking the lake. You’ll be greeted by a view that Mark Twain described as, “the fairest picture the whole earth affords.” The stone and marble patio has two picnic tables, an umbrella, barbecue, and chaise lounges. There are steps that lead down to a wide expanse of white sandy beach. This beach is absolutely perfect for kids because as you go out to play in the water, it gets deeper very gradually. You can walk out for quite a distance before it is actually over your head! If you have a boat, we provide a mooring buoy.

Various pine and aspen trees, and shrubs native to the area surround MOON DUNE. Ever-fragrant sage grows wild on our beach! Taking you back to Victorian times, you’ll even discover a badminton court nestled between the trees and the dune down by the street. In the last 2 years, we’ve planted over 1,500 flowering plants and shrubs native to the Tahoe area to enhance the MOON DUNE gardens—and we’re still planting!

Staying with us, you’ll be a short drive from the Nevada casinos and nightlife. The Tahoe area is also blessed with a large variety of really fine restaurants and several, wonderful shops, all within easy reach of our home. MOON DUNE is about a four-hour drive from San Francisco on Interstate 80. It’s easily accessible from the rest of the country as well. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is only about an hour away. Turning off North Lake Boulevard and driving through the tall rock columns that support the wrought iron “MOON DUNE” arch, you’ll know you’ve arrived at a very special place.

Walking up the dune on the stone driveway leading to the landing and the front door, you’ll survey that awesome view of the lake and discover our special home with colored rock surrounding each window and a slate roof that we think will truly welcome you home! Houses are just not built like this one anymore! The various nooks and crannies give this place the character and magical charm that make it not just a house, but a home. We invite you to come home to MOON DUNE this year!
